All clients at Sober College participate in both individual and group therapy. Prior to admission, Sober College’s Clinical Team evaluates each new client’s history and assigns them to one of our four therapists; the goal is to match each client with a therapist who will best meet their individual needs. Generally, this therapist will remain with the client for the duration of their stay at Sober College.
Once a client admits the clinical treatment team creates a comprehensive treatment plan which has been formulated through assessments, evaluations and emotional intelligence questionnaires. These clinical treatment plans incorporate a wide range of clinical treatment services depending upon the clients individual needs. Treatments include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques, as well as taking a developmental perspective and family systems approach. In addition to individual therapy a minimum of once a week, group therapy is also required three to 10 times per week depending on the level of care. Finally, after a client leaves treatment, their therapist can be incorporated into their aftercare program. If a client moves out of the area, phone therapy sessions can be scheduled in order to ensure transitional support. By offering both individual and group therapy, and having our clinical team in constant communication, Sober College clients are given a well-rounded and personal therapeutic component.
Weekly Individual Therapy
Clients at Sober College participate in individual therapy one-to-three times a week. They work through past and present issues with the help of a therapist whom they develop a close relationship with during their stay. Consistent sessions allow the client to build trust with their therapist, leading to insight and healing. Individual therapy allows clients to go deeper into the issues that may have contributed to their initial drug and alcohol abuse.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
At Sober College we utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which is an evidence-based approach proven to be effective in treating conditions typical to this population, including:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder
In addition to individual therapy, all clients attend a minimum of three group therapy sessions a week. Sober College also offers more specialized groups on topics like grief, gaming addiction and anger management on a rotating basis. We use a combination of traditional therapeutic techniques, as described above and less traditional therapeutic approaches in order to help clients grow in their emotional intelligence. The goal is facilitate the recovery process by various therapeutic techniques. Our experiential therapy program focuses on emotional intelligence and somatic mindfulness. While engaging in experiential activities including equine therapy, trapeze, wind tunnel and surf therapy, clients are encouraged to take pause and get in touch with their emotions and how their bodies respond to the stress or exhilaration that they experience. We believe that this awareness is directly related to preventing relapse. We often see clients who struggle with traditional “talk therapy” respond well to our experiential therapy program.
Individual and group therapy is centered on an examination of:
- Family of Origin Issues
- Adaptive vs. Maladaptive Coping Strategies
- Grief Work
- Overcoming Patterns of Trauma
- Management of Stress, Anxiety, and Other Disorders
- Relapse Prevention Skills
- Emotional Intelligence
- Somatic Mindfulness
- Recognition and Arrest of Unhealthy Behavior Patterns
