Residential Program Attends a Camping Retreat

Residential rehab program

This last weekend Sober College men’s residential program had a chance to experience a different type of Alcohol Anonymous meeting. Our men’s program traveled to a sober men’s retreat and participated in their recovery by fellowshipping with other sober young people and attending a 12-step speaker meeting. The consensus of our men’s program was that the meeting was, “Different and cool, and the speaker was really cool.” Being able to attend a meeting at one of these retreats is just another experience that not many young adults in treatment get Continue Reading »

Electronic Cigarettes: Helping Young Adults in Rehab Quit Smoking

Young Adult Rehab and Electronic Cigarettes

The electric cigarette or e-cig is a new tool used in order to quit smoking. While a helpful product, some people continue to argue it’s unhealthy, including the major tobacco corporations. Cigarettes have many dangerous carcinogens including acetone, carbon monoxide, and arsenic; therefore this e-cig technology that has become popular all across the United States is not nearly as dangerous as some argue it is. Smokersutopia.com states “the e-cigarette is from 100 to 1,000 times safer than tobacco cigarettes.” Yes, that means although it’s not 100% safe, it’s better than Continue Reading »

Physical Fitness and Sports in a Residential Treatment Center?

fitenss

Physical fitness plays an important role in early sobriety because of its mental and physical benefits. For example, in physical fitness, the release of endorphins naturally helps students “feel” happier along with gain self-confidence. All of this provides a foundation to sobriety; therefore, it’s beneficial for students to find a physical activity that they enjoy so they can reap the natural benefits of exercise. Just recently, Sober College took a handful of its residents to Sky High Sports, a trampoline park located in Woodland Hills, CA. While a child-like, innocent Continue Reading »

Heroin Abuse and Addiction Rehab

Heroin Abuse

Heroin, an opiate, affects the brain in a selected number of ways. It bonds to special chemical receptors in the brain that are in charge of pain signals, emotions, stress, impulses, and memory. The brain automatically notices the relief that heroin provides and re-wires itself emotionally to do what it needs to continuously achieve this result. When heroin replaces natural chemicals in the brain during usage, it becomes increasingly difficult for users to refrain from using the drug. Heroin abuse is becoming more and more prevalent and is incredibly dangerous Continue Reading »

Drug Rehab Program Confronts Young Adult Drug Abuse

Drug Rehab Program

Last night I heard a speaker at Alcoholics Anonymous meeting who is on a hit television show, that I am sure many of you have seen or heard of, about young adults suffering from addiction. Her share was relatable and I was able to connect with it in many ways. She provided two interesting facts during her share that I thought were important: 7,000 14-26 year-olds die every month from pill overdoses and 2,000 14-21 year-olds try prescription drugs for the first time every day…. Sober College has given me Continue Reading »

Not only did students attend marathon meetings but they also enjoyed themselves at the convention dances. Something as simple as a sober dance impacts Sober College students because it shows that they can have fun without substance abuse. Aside from the sober dances, students were able to fellowship in an environment Continue Reading »
