Sunday 09/26/10

Temperatures have spiked to 108 here in the Valley so I’m holding off on any outdoor activities until the wave passes. Please encourage residents to drink plenty of water- even when staying indoors and advise them as necessary about the risks of even walking around in this weather.

Thanks!

Friday 09/10/10

It’s great to be back from my trip out of town these past few days.

Last weekend, The California State Box Lacrosse Tournament was tremendously fun despite out two losses.

The first same we got smoked by South Bay who actually had PROFESSIONAL lacrosse players on their team (i.e. LA Riptide and Canadian Pro teams).

In the second game, we lost to the Chiefs who ended up winning the cup. We actually dominated in ball control and took more shots than the Chiefs, but were shut down by thier Ex-Canadian Pro goalie Michael Weitz who stopped ALMOST everything we threw at him. HOWEVER, from Preseason through the tournament, we still finished with a 5-4 winning season and I’m really proud of the guys for their efforts. The next season starts in October but will be on Saturdays.

Unfortunately we also suffered a loss in soccer on Saturday but are still holding a winning 3-2 record. Ryan McFadyn joined our team and performed really well.

Rock Climbing will take place next Saturday and all houses are invited.

The Next triathlon is September 25th at Bonelli Park in San Dimas. Preparing for this will be our Fitness Departments priority.

Special thanks to the Pfeifer’s for their support on the SC Athletic Program!

Monday 08/30/10

Some GREAT photos were posted this week http://scfitness.shutterfly.com/

Both the Lacrosse and Soccer Teams had victories this week!

The soccer team has a winning 3-1 record so far this season and the lacrosse team, with one game to go, has a winning 4-2 season. We have been getting a nice turn out for families spectating in recent weeks.

Sam, David, and Sean did a rugged 7 mile mountain bike ride on Friday. Sam started Krav Maga (Israeli Self-Defense) on Saturday and Jordan F. was signed up.

Ben, Jeff W., Debbie and Patrick will be attedning the anatomy lecture for Personal Trainers on Friday.

Finally we had 8 climbers this past Wednesday night- all did exceptionally well.

-Ken N.

Friday 08/24/10

The Soccer Team had a 9-7 victory this past weekend but the Lacrosse Team lost to Cal State Channel Islands byt three goals.

Jordan Filler starts Krav Maga/Cross Fit Training this week.

This Week’s Schedule looks like this:

Wednesday: 5:30pm Rock Climbing

Thursday: 4:30pm Lacrosse Game

Friday: 2pm lecture for those working on their Personal Training Certifications

Saturday: Afternoon Mountain Biking
5pm Softball Game at Sober Souls

Sunday: Shane and Will are leading a hike! Call them to find out more.
9:30am Lacrosse Game
12:30pm Soccer Game
1:30pm Water-Polo Game
5:30pm Vollyball Game

Thanks, everyone, for your wonderful support

Monday 10/5/09

Friday night we opened up the fall lacrosse season with a rather ugly loss. With Alan M. on injured reserve, we had a freshman goalie assigned to us that was nothing like the pro we were shooting on. As previously mentioned, Jamie Ireland of the Long Island Lizards pro team is playing with us and put four in the goal. Colby had the only other goal totaling 5 compared to our opponent’s 15. Colby mentioned that our team moved the ball well though and there was not a large difference in possession time.
Friday night basketball at Spectrum continues to go well and SC athletes are competitive in this league winning at least half their games. We have two teams of five players who typically have two games each Friday. (I will post all the rosters in the morning.)
Saturday, we chalked up a one run win against Sober Souls in softball. The girls have been playing consistently and add life to the games. This week it was Julia, Shelby, and Kaitlin putting in the effort.
Sunday’s soccer game was another 5-5 tie. SC players were up 5-3 with 4 minutes to go then let victory slip through their hands with a sloppy defense. Daniel did an excellent job at tending goal, however, while our starter Todd Lawrence ( who doesn’t go to SC) nurses a broken ankle from a game two weeks ago. Kudos to Colin for coming through in a clutch and driving.
Other SC athletes were up at O’Dark Thirty for the Steamboat Triathlon in San Dimas, CA. James, Peter, and Donny completed the whole triathlon- 300m Swim, 24km Bike, and 4km Run. Alex H. was the swimmer of a relay team, followed by Ken on the bike and BJ on the run. Everyone finished. Of concern was that there were 10 signed up.  Charlie did not show or call to let me know he would be absent, Colin T. bailed out that morning, Shelby bailed out on friday, Casey was genuinely sick, and Caitlyn C. could not go due to administrative issues.
Flag football was a success tonight with the help and committment of Lucas. When we showed up, the administrator of Cleveland High School informed us that, by mistake, the lights were off and the sprinklers were on making it impossible to play. We did get the orientation in and submitted the rosters to league officials. Afterwards, an opposing team suggested we play an impromptu game at another local field and it turned out very well. SC players had the upper hand in the game.

Monday 8/3/09

The soccer team earned a 5-4 victory yesterday in a verrrry well played game. Given our tendency to lose or tie games in the last two minutes, I was screaming my head off at the team to not let the opponents score. Three new residents made a substantial contribution the victory- Patrick, Justin, and Ethan who had two goals. Ethan stated to me that he wants to play Division I soccer at Penn State. Veteran Paul Stamp also had two goals.

The lacrosse game was a tight 13-11 loss. We were up by three goals at the half and let the “W” slip through our hands. It was easy to do, however, as the team we played is the best in the league (some of their best players were absent too). Will and Colby were the superstars with 4 goals each. Donny had two and Chris P. had one.

Joined by Dean, James W. played hockey for the first time at SC last night in an 8:30pm game. He scored once and Dean scored six times.

A number of residents played softball on Saturday including Tiffany and Karla who always perform very well.

All SC biathlon/ 5K participants finished their respective races on Thursday night- with the exception of Max C. who gassed out on the swim. James and Donny did both the run and the swim, Colby and Max did just the swim, and the rest of us were runners. Alex H. we believe, placed 5th over all.

The Hanson Dam Triathlon is coming up on the 15th

Monday 7/13/09

Athletics had a busy weekend despite the concurrent film festival.

The soccer team had a 9-5 victory. Dan G. lead the team with three goals and the rest of us had one each. It was such a pleasure to watch the residents working together in such a tightly knit fashion. James really played a hot defense as well.( Dan, James, Ken, KC, David, Dean, Donny)

The Lacrosse team reversed the numbers in a 5-9 loss against a local club team named “South Bay” which just came off a fifteen game field lacrosse season. Ken opened up with an early goal and Donny followed through with 2 more. Will and Colby also found the net late in the game. Alan M. served as goalie in both lacrosse and tonights hockey game. (This young man with 8 surgeries on his leg has been making a wonderful come back- including the loss of 40 pounds.) Braxton, Chris P., Peter, Devan, James, and Alex H.- all played very well. What is so amazing about this is that the team was comprised of all SC residents. Our name is the “Warriors” and we will sport green uniforms. ( We are actually 3 short and need to buy more).

Five residents took the ice in tonight’s hockey game. Dean had 9 goals, Eric with three, and Craig with one. They were joined by their teammate Michael C. and all were shooting on Alan M.

We made two trips to the beach for surfers Devan, Peter, Colby, Donny, Collin, and David.

The Friar and Melvin Houses played softball on Saturday while Oxnard enjoyed a trip to the climbing hall hosted by Brandon and Braxton. Thank you mentors, across the board for making this work!

I took Max to train in gymnastics for 90 minutes on Friday and he seemed thrilled to reconnect with his favorite sport. Craig is now boxing with Zach Otto who received accolades from his coach. Colby is enjoying Yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Spectrum.

Monday 6/8/09

I dropped Nick and Scott off at their campsite- they are in the wild for the next 24 hours, a Sober College first.I am the contact person in case anything goes wrong.
Five residents completed the two hour climbing class on Thursday- Devan, Dan, Craig, James, and Braxton. Karla was amazingly persitent on the rock wall this time and worked hard to overcome her fear of heights. She would usually stop half way up, but now she is completing routes regularly. Other climbers were Alex, Peter, David, Max H., and Ian.
We had 20-25 participants for the softball game on Saturday against Sober Souls/Tarzana. The whole of Oxnard came as did David, Luis, Jared, KC, Zach, Nick G., Brian, Karla, and several others. Thanks to the mentors who drove!
Two hockey players took the ice last night- Dean and the new resident Eric. Both had four goals. Alan will be starting regular play when the Divorce of Figaro is completed.
The soccer team had a 6-4 loss in a tight game. Madi drove the soccer team while I took Will, Devan, and Eric to play two hours of Lacrosse in Glendale. All are psyched for the upcoming box league where SC will have it’s own team. I thought it was so wonderful that we had both games going simulatneously- as a testament to how amped up the residents are about fitness and sports.
We still have an ultimate frisbee game this evening. Peter and his family are expected as well as Ian, Alex J., Grey, and perhaps others

Monday 5/18/09

First let me thank Rick once more- his organizational skills had things running with the efficiency of a Swiss watch this weekend.
11 SC residents took the field in today’s soccer game- an intense 3-3 tie. We had debuts by Kevin G, Kevin K, and Alex J. Other team members were Lance, Ladson, Scott, Lee, Steve, James, Dean, Max, and Ken. (Goals by James and Lance).
Simultaneous with the hockey game taking place in Van Nuys ( Colin and Kevin), we launched Ultimate Frisbee today. The residents participating were Peter, Gray, Alex Jones, Ian, Dean, and Ken. The game was held in Newbury Park.
The American Indians nicknamed Lacrosse “The Little Brother of War”. In recent years, it has been called the “Fastest Game on Two Feet”. Both aptly describe what took place Friday night for two and a half hours. James, Colin, Will, Peter, Alex, Alan, Max,and Ken comprised the SC presence. The owner of the league stated that if we form our own team next season, he will provide custom jerseys for us. We would just have to send him the logo we would like to use.
Karla and I are going golfing this week. Those with access to clubs are welcome to join us.

Colin and Nick G. played hockey on Saturday Night with three goals each in an 11-8 win. A second game was played Sunday Night by Colin, Kevin, and new resident Dean Speicher who scored 3,3,and 1 goals respectively.

The soccer team had an 15-8 loss to the league’s first place team. Lee had his first goal of the season, Lance had one goal, and Ken had three. The new season starts this Sunday with new additions to the roster.

Friday 5/1/09:

Once again the game ball goes to Alan who, as goalie, was a real trooper after suffering three 80 mph shots to the family jewels. The last time was by me and the noise of the ball hitting his cup was so loud I thought I hit the fiberglass backboards. Alan received a number of compliments tonight from his opponents. Parenthetically, I told Alan that I keep having these fantasies about him completing the whole triathlon on May 17th- after I don’t know how many leg and hip surguries. So far, he said he will do the bike and the swim. Maybe we could bribe him with some sort of Alan Triathlon Fund.
SC players were divided up tonight with Chris B and myself one team and the rest of the guys on the other. Chris’s team took the 15-5 win. Max had his first goal tonight and was so happy his countenance looked like that of a cherub. The goal tally was:
Ken-2
Chris Bruno-1
Colin-1
Max-1
Will played a fantastic game and dominated the ball much more than those of us who did put the ball in the net. Alex and Peter are also making progress each week. Colin and I faced off a number of times in an even contest. (Last week, Colin’s goal was after burning Ken on a face off.)
Dean S and his family came to watch.
Thanks as well to James Fuchs who came out to support us tonight!

-KN

Tuesday 4/7/09:

We had two exciting games this past weekend:

Friday Night Lacrosse left us with a tight 9-7 loss. Our rookie goalie, Alan M, faced a former Canadian Pro goalie by the name of Weitz and really held his own. Will, Peter, and myself were the other SC players on our team. Peter was our Athlete of the Week since he also played two hours of lacrosse with me on Sunday as well as staying for the Sober Souls softball game ( everyone else bailed).

Soccer made for an exciting Sunday afternoon as well. Lee, Steve K., Ladson, Scott J., Lance, and myself were singing British soccer fight songs at the top of our lungs on the way to the game. Testo levels were running high throughout the game landing us with 2 “yellow cards” and one “blue” for unnecessary roughness in this 2-2 tie. We left the other team on good terms and politely turned down an offer to join them at the pub.
