Cocaine addiction has been researched by many people in the medical field. The University of Cambridge has found a difference between recreational cocaine users, and cocaine addicts. Dr Karen Ersche and her team acquired results of brain scan tests that indicates recreational users have a larger “frontal lobe” in the brain which serves as the decision and self-control center. They are very similar, but their program is based around a different substance abuses: Narcotics Anonymous focuses on drugs and Alcoholics Anonymous on Alcohol. Another Student Dies In Birthday Alcohol Binge The death of Mason Sumnicht, a student of Chico State University, is just one of the thousands of college fatalities caused by drinking too much alcohol. After consuming 21 shots to celebrate his 21st birthday on November 4th 2012, the undergraduate suffered extreme alcohol poisoning resulting in permanent brain damage. He was taken off life support after 11 days in the hospital. Sumnicht was believed to have been pledging the Sigma Pi fraternity. Building a Community of Sober Young Adults

This past week our students and staff took part in Community Day, where both staff and students participated in experiential therapy and bonding activities, designed to develop trust and camaraderie within the young adult community at Sober College. Sober College’s treatment program requires a certain level of trust between students, and between students and their staff.  Getting to know each other during activities, like those at Community Day, helps ensure that the level of trust and communication within the Sober College community can be fostered. Experiential Therapy Treatment

This past week, Sober College headed out to Universal City Walk to have therapy at 600mph. The experiential therapy treatment program at Sober College was designed to create situations where student can learn and put therapy tools to the test. Activities like surfing, indoor skydiving, and trapeze therapy get students out of their comfort zone and out of the therapy office. Women Addiction Treatment

Women, being the fastest growing segment of substance abusers in the United States, are currently estimated as 2.7 million substance abusers. According the National Institute on Drug Abuse, doctors are prescribing twice as many psychotropic medications for women as they do for men. Why are more women struggling with drug addictions? Drinking and Exercise

Recently published, Women’s Health uncovered the effects of alcohol on your body and on your workout. At Sober College we hold fitness as five core competency not only for our students to achieve a healthy lifestyle but to rebuild the sound body and mind. Our students are learning how exercise releases endorphins, increases blood flow, creates regular sleep patterns, and includes creating a healthy diet, all things which alcohol can strip away.
