About Men’s Drug Treatment at Sober College

Sober College Young Adult Male Drug Treatment

Sober College Men’s Program at Zuma Beach.

Studies have shown that men naturally have a different response to drugs and alcohol than women, which is why Sober College offers a gender-specific Men’s Drug Rehab Program designed specifically for young men ages 17- 26. Our Men’s Treatment Program consists of three phases: Primary, Apartment, and Sober-Living. The Men’s Primary Program is housed in a single-sex, 18 bed home in an upscale neighborhood in Woodland Hills, California. Our men’s houses come complete with various amenities including a movie  room, a game room, a pool table, and more. Our Men’s Apartment Program, which is usually for clients that stay four or more months, is located in an apartment complex near the men’s primary house. For those clients in need longer term care, we also offer a men’s sober living home, which is only available to men that have gone through all phases of the Sober College Program.

Our houses and apartments are under 24 hour supervision with an awake overnight staff to ensure that our clients are safe and secure. The men’s houses and apartments are staffed by mentors, the majority of whom are male, and have either graduated from the Sober College or have multiple years of sobriety. Our mentors are hand-picked not only because of their length of sobriety and past work experience but also because of the quality of service they can provide for our male clients. By having personal experience with Sober College and sobriety they are able to understand what the clients are going through and serve as additional support, along with their counselor, therapist, psychiatrist, and academic staff. Gender-specific housing, groups, and therapy foster growth by providing our male clients with a safe and open environment, and by giving them the opportunity to build strong bonds with their male peers as they trudge the path of recovery together.

Providing a Gender-Specific Treatment Model

Men’s Program at Six Flags Magic Mountain.

Sober College offers both Men’s and Women’s Treatment Programs and provide both sets of young adults with the most individualized and cutting-edge dual-diagnosis care available. However, at Sober College, we have found that gender-specificity is a key component for young adults in early sobriety not only because of the damaging effects relationships can have on newly sober young adults, but also because of different clinical needs of men and women who have struggled with substance abuse and other co-occurring disorders. Men and women have different feelings and emotions surrounding drug and alcohol abuse, and have experienced different consequences and therefore need programs that target their sex’s individual needs.

Our Men’s and Women’s Programs have significantly different treatment curriculum that address issues specific to each gender. The Men’s Program has different group times and topics, gym times, off-campus activities, and 12-step meetings than the Women’s Program; everything has been specifically designed to treat drug and alcohol addiction in young adult men. This gender-specific programming also ensures that the women do not serve as a distraction for the men, allowing each client at Sober College to get the most out of all aspects of our program.

Offering Progressive Living-Environments Because Length of Stay Matters

Sober College also believes that the length of stay matters when it comes to recovery from addiction. We require a minimum commitment of 90 days, with an average stay between 6 months and 1 year. Studies have shown that the length of time a young adult spends in a treatment environment greatly affects their sobriety and ability to continue on to leading happy, successful, and sober lives after they leave treatment.

Sober College provides 24 hour supervision, including an active overnight staff to ensure that each young adult that comes through out program is safe and secure. However, unlike other programs, the Men’s Drug Treatment Program at Sober College is progressive, and designed to ensure that each client is met at their various levels of needs as they transition through the program. When someone commits to stay longer than 90 days, if they are achieving in all areas of their program, they have the opportunity to move to the Apartment Program. In the Men’s Apartment Program, clients are living with fewer people, and are given more personal responsibility. There is still 24 hour supervision and active overnight staff, but they are able to move forward, learn to live in a dorm like setting, and practice life skills that will better prepare them for independent living after they leave our care.

The goal of the Sober College Men’s Treatment Program is to not only to help young adults get and stay sober, but also to give them the time, opportunity, and support they need to maintain their sobriety. Our progressive treatment model is designed to help move your son toward independent living.

Young Adult Treatment Unlike Any Other

The Men’s Treatment Program at Sober College focuses first and foremost on sobriety, but it also focuses on the specific needs of the young adult male population. Based around Five Core Competencies, the Sober College Treatment Model uses sports and/or art as a means of self-expression for clients. If a client is having a difficult time expressing himself in therapy, he may be asked to express himself musically.

Experiential Therapy activities like surf, trapeze, and indoor skydiving are also incorporated into the Men’s Treatment Program; it gives young adults the opportunity to be active and work through their emotions in real life, anxiety inducing situations. The goal is for them to learn how to process their emotions so they’re prepared for life’s challenges upon leaving treatment.

Fitness, Creative Arts, and Experiential Therapy are just a few examples of how the Sober College Program is designed to specifically address the needs of the young adult male population and help them recover from drug and alcohol addiction. These activities help Sober College students to address underlying issues with:

  • Self-Esteem (Ego Centrism)
  • Body Image Issues
  • Emotional Attachment
  • Alcoholism and Drug Addiction
  • Healthy Romantic Relationships
