Requirements to Become a Substance Use Counselor in Connecticut

Sober College School of Addiction Studies (SCSAS) is an Approved Education Provider in Connecticut through the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for Counselors. We offer addiction counselor training and education that meets the Connecticut addiction counseling requirements to help you become a:

• Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC)
• Counselor in Training (CIT) in Connecticut

With our online counselor training programs, you can earn all the education you need except for 6 hours of live ethics that will have to be completed in a classroom or training setting to complete the Connecticut Addiction Counseling requirements. We offer the flexibility you need to work towards your goal at your own pace or in as little as 6 months. You can start anytime and with our CCB approved curriculum, you can begin on your path to becoming a CAC and CIT in Connecticut.

Connecticut Addiction Counseling Requirements to Become a Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC)

Below are the requirements for becoming a Certified CAC in Connecticut based on the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) site.

Supervised Work Experience

• 6,000 Hours. Or, with a qualifying degree:
• Master’s – 3,000 Hours
• Bachelor’s – 4,000 Hours
• Associate’s – 5,000 Hours

Addiction-Specific Counseling Experience

• 2,000 Hours of individual/group counseling
• Training and Experience – 300 hours
• Distance Learning – Up to 225 hours of CCB-approved distance learning can be applied Up to 75 hours of distance learning can be applied if not CCB-approved
• Supervised Practicum- 300 hours with no less than 10 hours in each performance domain
• Professional References – 3 positive professional references with 1 from current or most recent clinical supervisor and two from professional colleagues (preferably CCB credentialed)
• Written Case Presentation – 6 to 12 pages with signed fact sheet following the CCB formatting requirements CAC Exam (IC&RC ADC Exam) – Passing score on the IC&RC ADC exam
• Annual Renewal Standards Must be completed per year to maintain credential – 20 hours of addiction-specific training 1 hour of CCB-approved ethics

Counseling Requirements in Connecticut to Become a Counselor in Training (CIT)

Below are the Connecticut addiction counseling requirements to become a CIT based on the Connecticut Certification Board, Inc. (MSACCB) site.

Training and Education

• 60 Hours (Addiction Specific) Including: 6 hours of CCB-Approved Ethics Including 6 hours CCB Certification Process Overview Workshop Effective September, 2010, no equivalent courses will be accepted
• CAC Exam (IC&RC ADC Exam)

Optional: CIT’s are eligible to sit for the CAC Exam
Annual Renewal Standards Must be completed per year to maintain credential- 30 Hours of addiction-specific training 1 hour of CCB-approved ethics
