Arizona Certified Addiction Counselor Requirements
The following are the requirements and procedures to be followed to be certified by the Arizona Board for Certification of Addiction Counselors (ABCAC) is a member of the International Certification Reciprocity Consortium/Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (IC&RC/AODA).
Arizona Addiction Counselor certificates available:
- CAC-Certified Addiction Counselor
- CADAC-Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor
Arizona Addiction Counselor Levels:
- Level I-High School Diploma or GED
- Level II-Associates Degree
- Level III-Bachelor’s Degree
Level I and Level II are eligible for the CAC certificate. Level I and Level II certificates are not eligible for reciprocity.
Level III is eligible for CADAC certification. Level III is eligible for reciprocity with the member boards of IC&RC.
Work Experience Needed To Become An Arizona Addiction Counselor
All qualifying work experience must be completed within six (6) years prior to applying for certification. This is defined as full-time, part-time, paid or volunteer, working DIRECTLY with the alcohol/drug addicted client.
Minimum Work Requirements Required To Become An Arizona Addiction Counselor
CAC-2 years or 4,000 hours working with substance abuse clients.
CADAC-3 years or 6,000 hours of supervised work experience specific to the ADC
Domains listed below. An Associate’s degree in Behavioral Science will exchange for 1,000 hours. A BA/BS in Behavioral Science exchanges for 2,000 hours. A Master’s degree in a Behavioral Science exchanges for 4,000 hours.
ADC Domains:
- Screening, Assessment, and Engagement
- Treatment Planning, Collaboration, and Referral
- Counseling
- Professional and Ethical Responsibilities
Minimum Education Requirements
CAC-180 clock hours of education. 90 hours in alcohol/drug studies and 90 hours in counseling. 6 hours of Ethics and 4 hours HIV/AIDS education must be included.
CADAC-300 hours specific to the ADC Domains listed above above. 6 hours of Ethics education and 4 hours HIV/AIDS education must be included.
Minimum Supervised Hours
300 hours specific to the ADC Domains. There must be a minimum of 10 hours in each domain listed above on page 1.
IC&RC Examination
Must pass the Alcohol and Drug Test.
Arizona Addiction Counselor Code of Ethics
The applicant must read, agree to adhere to the code of ethics, and sign ABCAC’s Code of Ethics. There will be a written enforcement and appeals process if a professional violates ABCAC’s Code of Ethics.
Recertification for Arizona Addiction Counselors
Forty (40) hours of continuing education training specifically related to
Substance Abuse every 2 years, or 20 hours every year of certification. Three (3) hour class on Ethics and a three (3) hour class in Cultural Diversity education must be included in the Forty (40) hours of CEU’s.
Residency for Arizona Addiction Counselors
Applicant must live or work 51% of the time within Arizona for a year. This applies only at the time of initial application for credential.
