The Sober College Life Skills Infusion Program works with clients to teach and develop necessary life skills they will need to succeed during and after treatment. Achievement in life skills is acquired through a combined practical and learning approach that focuses on teachable moments with staff and clients. It is within these moments that the individual strengths and weaknesses of every student are understood, coached and re-directed and/or supported.
Building a Foundation
Life Skills is defined as the ability to cope with stresses and challenges of daily life, especially skills in communication and literacy, decision-making, occupational requirements, problem-solving, time management and planning. These areas of focus can be broken up into two categories that are addressed during a client’s time at Sober College: Personal Life Skills and Relational Life Skills.
Personal Life Skills
Clients living at Sober College are responsible for taking care of their living space, and completing chores in all phases of the Sober College program. Many young people have never been taught, or required to do simple day-to-day tasks needed when living on their own. Sober College focuses on a variety of life skills to help strengthen clients in the everyday tasks surrounding being a young adult. For example Sober College educates their clients in practical financial skills. Through a series of interactive workshops, online learning systems, and group activities, clients are brought to a better understanding of their own relationship with money and how it influences their decision making.
Additional areas include:
