Marshall Mathers, most commonly known as the rapper Eminem, is one of the most famous musicians on the planet. He’s sold millions of records, sound tracked movies, and has won an Academy Award, but at the end of the day he is just like every other human being.
No amount of money or fame can ever buy someone perfect health and just like so many other musicians, Mathers suffered from a crippling addiction to an assortment of drugs. Due to an inability to sleep, Mathers began taking sleep medication. In Mathers’ head he thought he didn’t have a problem because he wasn’t shooting up heroin or sniffing coke but was instead popping pills at a frantic pace every day. At the height of his addiction Mathers was popping 20 pills a day from an assortment of Vicodin, Valium, Methadone, and Ambien. Eventually, Mathers’ addiction caught up to him when he overdosed on Methadone pills in 2007. Due to the coating on the pills tearing up the lining on Mathers’ stomach, consequently leaving a massive hole in his stomach, Mathers had to constantly eat to avoid stomach aches and in doing so gained a significant amount of weight. After coming to terms with his addiction and his role as an active father, Mathers entered rehab – at the time he weighed a massive 230 pounds.
Recovery
As a way to both combat his weight gain and improve his physical and emotional health, Mathers started working out. First, Mathers started running and then he soon upped his workout routine by doing workout programs like P90x and Body Beast. Before he knew it, Mathers was back down to his normal weight and was able to sleep without the assistance of pills. It might be bittersweet, but due to his weight gain, Mathers found a healthy and effective way to ward off his pill addiction. Due to his already addictive mind, Mathers became addicted to a healthy lifestyle. Had it not been for Mathers’ conscious decision to start working out, he might’ve died.
