Teen Drug Abuse

Teen drug abuse is a growing epidemic. Many who struggle with addiction began experimenting during adolescence. Although statistics surrounding teen drug abuse are widely available, many parents are left in the dark or in denial regarding their own teen’s use. …Read More

It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of substance abuse in teens. While some may chalk certain behaviors up to simply “being a teenager,” the reality is that some of these behaviors are signs of a deeper issue. Ease of accessibility often plays a role in this, with many teens admitting to knowing how to obtain numerous illicit substances. These include prescription medication, marijuana, alcohol, cigarettes, and other dangerous drugs. The influence of pop culture and the media often inundates teens with messages that associate fun, popularity, and happiness with substance abuse. In addition, social media often creates a space where teens see others engaging these behaviors, creating a sense of normalcy regarding substance abuse even if that is not the case.

The dangers of abusing drugs during adolescence encompass more than just the side effects of the substances themselves. Teens are undergoing dramatic biological changes, and substance abuse can permanently affect the way in which a person’s brain is wired, bringing a new set of long-term health consequences that are unique to this developmental stage. Exploring the nature of addiction and having the ability to identify signs and symptoms of abuse is critical in overcoming teen drug abuse. It is necessary to understand the influences and experiences of those who have succumbed to peer pressure and the misconceptions surrounding safety of use in order to change the current trends. Stories, experiences, and consequences of teen drug abuse are outlined in this section in order to bring to light the influences on teen substance abuse today. Show Less.
